Kindergarten Newsletter
        September 30th -  October 4th

Homecoming is over! We had a blast and made some FUN memories! I was dog tired by Friday after the game! Emerson and JT did a wonderful job representing our K5 class. I am so proud of them. We will keep moving through our alphabet, working with some rhyming, sight words, working on handwriting, and diving deeper into our numbers to 10. We will work with things like before and after, making different ways to make 10. It’s hard to say on numbers 0-10 because it gets monotonous but I have to keep telling myself that they need a firm understanding of how to recognize, write, and manipulate these numbers to understand the bigger numbers. We are entering a new reading unit too. We will spend some time talking about weather. It’s pretty fun in kindergarten because the will learn more than   ***   what’s the wear like today, like today, like today….  ***      We’ll talk about the types of weather, about how weather is formed, and the effects of the sun to just name a few. We are also jumping on into the “holiday season”. From now until after Christmas we have a holiday and we surely ENJOY them in kindergarten. In October we celebrate Halloween of course but we’ll talk about bats, spiders, and do some pumpkin investigations! I would like to ask a favor! For our pumpkin investigations we use different types of pumpkins. If you don’t mind sending a pumpkin that would be GREATLY appreciated. I need different types/colors/sizes/textures. Walmart has green, white, and orange. I’ve seen some neat ones at Lowe’s and Home Depot. If you decide to pick up one PLEASE text me so I can be sure we don’t end up with 5 green ones! We will need them by October 11th.

PLEASE don’t forget drinks in your kiddos lunchboxes to have a lunch time.
If you have any gently loved uniforms that you’d like to get rid of please consider donating to the school. We have a $5 spot where anyone can come and purchase uniforms!
Idea: Send a thermos of water for the playground. It helps to have a bottle to bring out to the playground during these HOT days!
Don’t forget to send nap mats back after we wash! J
Please sign and return those “sign and return” papers asap. I use these to guide instruction and would love to have them back. If you want/need a copy let me know! I’ll be glad to send one! J
Secret Tips:
Your toolkit has a “fridge” and a container with magnetic letters. Please feel free to use those to work on letters and sounds. This is another neat way to practice.  You can just lay the letters out on the table and give your kiddos a letter sound. Have them find the letter that it matches with and have them place it on the fridge.
Use the vowel and consonant cubes to work with letter id as well. If you kiddos has the letter id down pat then move on to sounds. We want these sounds to be as fluid at possible because when they start reading we do not want them spending “brain power” trying to remember the sound.

It's HOMECOMING Week!!!

It's GREAT to be a LAKESIDE CHIEF!!!

Kindergarten Newsletter
September 23rd - September 27th

Poof! September is just about GONE! It amazes me how fast some months fly by! We have homecoming this week! It’s going to be a fun week! J We are going to make some lions, tin men, and scarecrows for our field sign. It’s going to be soooo cute! It’ll be hanging out at the football field on Friday. Check it out when you come. I have put a “run down” on the back to make it simple! We will also celebrate the first days of fall and Johnny Appleseed this week.  We will still have “school” this week even though we have lots of fun planned. I plan on keeping right on moving through our alphabet, working with some rhyming, working with handwriting, and diving deeper into our numbers to 10. We will work with things like before and after, which is greater and less, etc. I am going to be sending home some sign and return papers. These are just some “checks” that I have done to ensure that we are progressing. Please sign them and return them asap! There is nothing to worry about. I promise you! If I was concerned I would have already called you!!!  Remember, in kindergarten we do not record grades so if you see a low percentage look at it like this : it’s a percentage that we are trying to grow. It’s NOT a grade. It’s NOT a reflection on how “smart” my kid is. It IS a point that we use to ensure I’m teaching the right things and to ensure that your baby is GROWING! Take note of some areas that need some growth and focus on those things when working on “homework” in the afternoons. J

Kindergarten Newsletter
September 16th - September 20th

We have flown all around the world and back again! I am so glad that we do that unit because the kiddos have such a great time with it! It’s so eye opening and they LOVE learning about people that are different and similar to themselves. We will stop our journey for now and pickup a new journey. Our second unit is on kindness. It’s such an important unit because in the crazy world we live in today we need to teach our children the value of kindness. We are going to continue working on rhyming and introduce the idea of a letter, word, and a sentence. It’s a basic concept but it is very important for them to recognize the difference. We will also talk about what makes a sentence or not (very basic – like does that make sense or not). I’ve put sent 2 of the sight word sentence in your binders. I did not take out set 1 because it’s very likely your kiddos hasn’t mastered those yet. If they have WONDERFUL! I’m going to do another letter and sound check this week as well. You’ll see some growth for sure! J We will continue working on our numbers 0-10. We are identifying, writing, counting, making, etc. and so on! It’s very important for us to be able to do ALL these things before we move on to those PESKY TEEN NUMBERS!!!! We need class dues as soon as you can! We are ordering a special K5 t-shirt for field trips and such. We take several “messy” field trips and do not want to ruin uniforms! Please send your child’s shirt size asap too!! J J J We also have picture day on September 18th. These are our yearbook photos so we are required to wear our uniforms. We will be able to dress in our choice in the spring pictures. We have pictures at 9:00 so we will still be nice and pretty/handsome before we go play at PE!

Secret Tips:
Use your witch fingers, eye glasses, pointer light, or just your finger to practice reading. It is so important for us to be able to point to a word to read. That is a very developmental step that will come with practice. It will also go away when your child becomes a fluent reader (between 2nd and 4th grade-ish). Please help me reinforce this reading strategy.
If you kiddos is starting to “memorize” these sight word sentences feel free to do them out of order or make up your own! You could even use your sight word cards in your toolkit to physically build sentences like the one on the left (The orange container.)
Go ahead and use the sight word cards in your toolkit. I’ll get the other half to you soon!
We like to “battle” with these words in class. I literally throw them in the floor and we have a partner to race to find the word that I call out. Simple but they are OBSESSED! You can do this at home. Another fun activity is to use the finger light to “shine” on the word card being called out. If you think of some fun activity PLEASE share it with me!!!
Don’t forget that when we are writing our letters to do your best to promote correct letter formation! There is a paper in your binder that helps with this.

Day One – April 13 th -     Reading Log: from here on out we will use this system. I know I keep changing it on you and I’m sorry!   I’m...
