Kindergarten Newsletter
February 24th - February 28th
I am sad to see our plant unit go but am PUMPED for our next reading unit! We will still tend to our plants that we’ve planted but we are moving into animals and habitats next. This unit is just as much fun as the last one. The second half of kindergarten is always my favorite! J We will have a project to do this time and TONS of fun things to do in class as well. We also have our accreditation coming up this week. If your kiddos says there were people “watching them in class” that’s what that’s about! J We will continue to move through our measurement unit in math. They had a blast with the “Jack and the Beanstalk” measurement we did the other day. We will continue our number fluency and subitizing. This week we will focus on freshwater wetlands- our backyard- for our habitats. We will also draw our habitat out of a hat for our projects so you’ll get more information about that very soon. They are due right before Spring Break so you will have plenty of time to work on them. Remember, these hands-on experiences are tedious but SO important in the learning of a small child. J

Secret Tips:
I’ve started showing our kiddos these reading strategies below. They are very helpful in reminding kiddos of ways to help them figure out words instead of stalling or guessing. It’s a great habit to get into even at this age because this is where reading starts! J We don’t want to have to break habits later!

Kindergarten Newsletter
February 17th - February 21st

We will be having an extra quick Valentine’s Day party for our friends Emerson and Maddox. They were out sick on Valentine’s Day and who wants to miss all that fun?! We will have a fun Valentine’s Day snack on Tuesday afternoon. We will also continue moving through our plant unit. As you kiddos about Tops and Bottoms. It was such a FUN book. We will dive into Jack and the Beanstalk this week. It’s not so much about how plants grow as it is more about comprehension this week. We will plant some more seeds and do some plant type activities with this book. We will also continue to work with manipulating words. It’s a HUGE goal in kindergarten to be able to auditorily manipulate words. This includes rhyming, segmenting words into syllables and sounds, deleting and substituting sounds. We are moving right along with this. J We will also be moving right along in our math too. We’ll continue hitting on time to the hour and money. It’s been fun! Next, we will work with measurement. What more perfect that measurement and Jack and the Beanstalk?! Don’t forget to fill out your talent show paper so I can give it to Mrs. Kat and invite all your peeps. It’s going to be FUN!!!!

Secret Tips:
Readers use letter sound relationships to figure out words by looking at the letters and using the sounds they make. We can help them with this cueing system by asking the kiddos “Does it look right?”
We’ll start talking about Lips the Fish which is reminding the kiddos to get their lips ready for a word rather than just pausing and then guessing.
Stretchy Snake will come next. This encourages kiddos to stretch the word out (sound it out) instead of guessing.

Day One – April 13 th -     Reading Log: from here on out we will use this system. I know I keep changing it on you and I’m sorry!   I’m...
