Welcome to the Lakeside School Kindergarten Blog!!

September 9th- September 13th

We had such a fun and exciting week last week!! J We are officially LITTLE CHIEFS! I am going to send home the big chief information sheet when they get them to me. They usually exchange small gifts at the holidays, birthdays, or anytime really.

I am so impressed at how fast and fluently these kiddos are picking up on these letters and sounds. We will do a little bit more with our sight words, rhyming words, and letters/sounds this week. We worked on some map skills last week and will start diving into our schools around the world. Our focus will be on Japan, Finland, Kenya, Ecuador, and Australia. We will make a informational book during class and enjoy our projects on Friday!

Don’t forget your “me on the map” project. We did ours this weekend and enjoyed it! We will share out in class and show them off in the library with Mrs. Shoemaker. J J J I’ll send them back home 20th

Please have your Charleston Wraps orders back to school by the 10th

We will continue working on our numbers 0-10. We are identifying, writing, counting, making, etc. and so on! It’s very important for us to be able to do ALL these things before we move on to those PESKY TEEN NUMBERS!!!!

I am going to put a “sight word fluency sentence : set 1” in your binders. These are for us to practice using our sight words in context rather than just singled out on a card. We need class dues as soon as you can!

We are ordering a special K5 t-shirt for field trips and such. We take several “messy” field trips and do not want to ruin uniforms! Please send your child’s shirt size asap too!! J J J

We also have picture day on September 18th. These are our yearbook photos so we are required to wear our uniforms. We will be able to dress in our choice in the spring pictures.

If you have any gently loved uniforms that you’d like to get rid of please consider donating to the school. We have a $5 spot where anyone can come and purchase uniforms!
Idea: Send a thermos of water for the playground. It helps to have a bottle to bring out to the playground during these HOT days!

Secret Tips:
Toolkits went home!!!! I hope everyone is getting as excited about using them as I am! J I’ve put those “sight word fluency sentences: set 1” in your binders. Use your witch fingers, eye glasses, pointer light, or just your finger to practice reading. It is so important for us to be able to point to a word to read. That is a very developmental step that will come with practice. It will also go away when your child becomes a fluent reader (between 2nd and 4th grade-ish). Please help me reinforce this reading strategy.
If you kiddos is starting to “memorize” these sight word sentences feel free to do them out of order or make up your own! The biggest thing is to use the words *the, is, color words* when writing these sentences. I put the place images in because we haven’t learned to decode and blend words yet. The pictures will go away eventually! You could even use your sight word cards in your toolkit to physically build sentences like the one on the left (The orange container.)
Go ahead and use the sight word cards in your toolkit. I’ll get the other half to you soon!
We like to “battle” with these words in class. I literally throw them in the floor and we have a partner to race to find the word that I call out. Simple but they are OBSESSED! You can do this at home. Another fun activity is to use the finger light to “shine” on the word card being called out. If you think of some fun activity PLEASE share it with me!!!
